Just north of Truckee California you can find the Donner Camp Picnic Ground. Yes, that’s right. A sort of memorial to those who starved, where you can eat. It’s just past the border into California from Nevada. My intent was to go there for lunch, ideally with some sort of rib meal. The McDonalds in Truckee didn’t have the McRib, so that plan was on the ropes. I spent the night in Reno and headed out early. I neglected to shoot a man just to watch him die.

So Dunkin Donuts it was. I drank my Latte and ate a pink donut where the Donner party starved and did what they had to in order to survive.
Near the picnic tables, I saw a sign warning against interacting with any mammal. Because they all potentially had the plague. Yeah, the actual plague.
They just can’t catch a break in this place.
I walked the third of a mile interpretive trail, which was interesting.
I overheard a tour group in which one lady said “Georgina or and George Donner were the last two left here. And then she said, did they die?” And the guides answer was, without trying to be funny, that yes, they both died. But then following it up with what the wife did for the rest of her life and writing books and stuff like that. So, it’s true. They did die. They just didn’t die there in the story.

I got back to my car and then I drove away and got on the highway for California.
